Already this year eBay says 69,269 pre-loved mobile phones and 5.2 million mobile phone accessories have been sold by by Aussies and the e-retailer reckons selling some of the $8 billion-plus phones still sitting idle could generate “a healthy sum” for savvy sellers to put towards a new device.
According to eBay mobile phones are one of its bestselling tech items that will make sellers the most money.
eBay’s Sophie Onikul said, “With a 21% increase in the value of mobile phones sitting unused in drawers and cupboards in the last year alone and a mobile phone sold every 68 seconds on eBay, now is the perfect time to sell your old phone to fund an upgrade to a new model.

And if you are looking to get rid of your old, unused phones, the top models with the best secondhand return on eBay are Apple iPhone X, Apple iPhone 8 Plus, Samsung Galaxy note 9 and Samsung Galaxy S10.
“Following the recent release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Samsung Galaxy 10 Plus and Apple iPhone 11, eBay is making it easier to sell your old phone to upgrade to a newer one,” says eBay.
“Using eBay’s online tool, you can enter details about your device and the site will give an idea of what your phone’s worth - which could be up to $249 more than competitors offering trade-ins. These trending prices are based on the model, specs, colour and condition of the phone.”
And eBay says of all Australian states, Victoria topped the list for trading in mobile phones, selling 27,489 on the site in the first nine months of this year, followed by New South Wales (22,961) and Queensland (10,271).
eBay cites a Deloitte’s 2018 Mobile Consumer Survey showing that Australia remains a mobile phone market dominated by Apple and Samsung with 42% and 35% market share respectively and, since 2016, the rate of increase in mobile phone penetration has tapered - 89% of surveyed Australians now own a mobile phone, up from 88% in 2017 and 84% in 2016.
