AMEA Power, a renewable energy company in the Middle East, has announced the successful signing of a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with South African utility company, Eskom, for the 120 MW Doornhoek Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project.

The project was awarded through Bid Window 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP). With a majority stake in the USD 120 million Solar PV Project, AMEA Power has partnered with Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Energy, both wholly owned by African women, showcasing a commitment to diversity and inclusion in the energy sector.

Debt funding for the project will be provided by Standard Bank South Africa, while the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) will offer equity funding for local partners. The PPA, signed by key stakeholders including Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of South Africa, and Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, underlines a shared dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions in the region.

The Doornhoek Solar PV Project, situated near Klerksdorp in the North West province, is poised to generate over 325 GWh of clean energy annually, powering approximately 97,000 households and offsetting 330,000 tonnes of carbon emissions once operational. This contribution aligns with South Africa's ambitious target of renewable energy constituting 22 percent of the energy mix by 2030.

Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, said, “As part of South Africa’s long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy stability, the Doornhoek Solar Project will play a pivotal role in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. We are proud to be one of the first preferred bidders from Bid Window 6 to achieve this milestone. This project exemplifies AMEA Power’s commitment to driving positive environmental impact and fostering socio-economic development.”

AMEA Power established a regional office in Johannesburg last year, serving as a hub for its operations in Southern Africa.
