MONTPELIER, Vt. – Vermont will receive an additional $24.8 million as part of the decades-old settlement with tobacco manufacturers.

The Master Settlement Agreement reached back in 1998 between the 51 states and territories and the four largest cigarette manufacturers brings annual funds to the states from ongoing tobacco sales. Out of the over $165 billion disbursed to states so far, the Attorney General’s Office says Vermont has reaped more than $794 million.

“Tobacco companies caused a health crisis in this country, the effects of which we continue to feel today. In fact, we received more money through the MSA this year due to increased tobacco sales in Vermont,” Attorney General Charity Clark said in a statement.

The agreement also includes significant restrictions on advertising and marketing practices.
