Progress updates Chef EAS and Chef Infra Client

By

Business software vendor Progress has announced an enhanced version of the Chef Enterprise Automation Stack and foreshadowed the release of Chef Infra Client 17.

The new version of Chef Enterprise Automation Stack (EAS) aims to bring together elements of the Chef ecosystem into a more integrated approach to automation.

Chef EAS helps DevSecOps teams implement complex systems, provides visibility across heterogeneous infrastructure and applications, and unifies the experience for developers, operators, and administrators, according to the company.

New features include the automated execution of compliance audits within Chef Infra Client runs, the inclusion of Chef Infra Server information in Chef Automate dashboards, and a unified developer experience thanks to the inclusion of the Chef Habitat CLI in Chef Workstation.

Chef Infra Client 17 includes new pre-built resources, helpers and cookbooks created by Chef and the Chef community.

New features provide a streamlined developer experience, increased platform coverage and support (including ARM in the cloud, macOS Big Sur, the Apple M1 architecture, Windows 8 and PowerShell Core), and improved cloud detection, security and data aggregation for AWS and Azure.

"Today's release not only builds on our commitment to drive innovation to the Chef community, but also on our vision of delivering a unified and scalable platform that accelerates the rate in which enterprise DevSecOps can deliver changes in hybrid-cloud, regulated and edge computing environments," said Progress Chef business general manager Sundar Subramanian.

Progress APJ vice president John Yang said "As a result of the increased digitisation of the Australian economy, the local developers community has had to deliver unprecedented levels of high-impact business applications and improved digital experiences, in a record amount of time.

"DevOps and DevSecOps keep on growing in the region - it's important we give developers the tools they need to deliver on businesses' new requirements and expectations. Teams and organisations will further encode their operations, security, compliance and design efforts in order to bring these various teams together through common languages and products in DevOps, DevSecOps, and DesignOps."

"Australian companies that want to continue upgrading their digitisation journeys and capabilities while reducing complexity need modern technology and processes to drive real change. Today, those requirements include continuous application delivery, remediation automation, security and dependable compliance for processes to maximise efficiency".

IDC DevOps and DevSecOps research director Jim Mercer said "Enterprise DevSecOps teams today need scalable solutions that are easy to integrate into existing pipelines with low barriers to entry.

"Solutions that heavily leverage open source contributions often create good market value, having been developed collaboratively with users themselves to address their most current and pressing business needs."

The updated Chef Enterprise Automation Stack is available immediately, Chef Infra Client 17 will follow on 28 April 2021.
