The best features of Windows Phone, RIP (Top 5)
These were the top five best things about Windows phone.
Microsoft told the wold not to expect any more new features or hardware for the Windows mobile platform, but there were good things about Windows phone / Windows 10 Mobile.
For this episode, we enlisted the help of Microsoft expert and good friend Mary Jo Foley, let's get to it.
At number five is the apps.
Specifically, the Microsoft apps like Outlook.
Famously, Windows Phone and its successor had issues getting developers to make apps as quickly as they did for iOS and Android.
Because of that, Microsoft stepped up its mobile app presence Outlook on iOS and Android are really, really good, however, it was even better on Microsoft mobile devices.
And number four was The People Hub, pretty much every communication you had with someone, appeared in one place so you could post to people on Twitter.
Or Facebook from one app.
Or, you could see what's new from different networks in one app.
You could even call or text them if you wanted in the hub.
All those functions in one place.
And number three is some crazy designed hardware.
There's no doubt, the iPhone influenced all feature smartphones in design.
Early Windows devices look like no other smartphone.
Take a look at the red, white, and who could forget yellow.
It also featured a 41 megapixel camera.
Which also meant a big camera bump on the back.
It was a real attempt to make Windows phones look like anything on the market.
And number two is Continuum.
Can anyone blame Microsoft for trying to build the pocket PC.
The idea has been around for a long time.
With Continuum you can use a mouse, keyboard and an external display to make a Windows 10 mobile phone to act like a real computer.
Even though no one company has really figured out the perfect set up.
It's still a great idea.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a dock that let's you use your phone like a PC.
All be it, one running Android.
And at number 1 is Live Tiles.
Microsoft took a big risk with this mobile design Instead of static icons, you got information about the underlying app right from the home screen.
Essentially you had widgets everywhere.
Instead of interacting with the phone to get information, it was right there.
It was a bold move and it looks like nothing else.
Not as snarky as you thought it would be, sorry.
Anyway another thanks to MJ for her help.
